BRRR...
The drop in temperature in the cold winter months brings an increased susceptibility to colds, illness and a general feeling of lethargy. This is why it is important to be able to generate internal body heat, which is so effective in healing the body and strengthening the immune system.
Tip: The use of Ujiyi Breath generates internal body heat most effectively so try to utilize throughout your practice by constricting the back of the throat creating a soft oceanic sound.
As we brace ourselves against the bitter cold, wrapping our coat even tighter, our shoulders hunch and our posture suffers. Every muscle naturally contracts, constricting blood flow and making our muscles tighter and shorter. Yoga is essential in relaxing and lengthening our muscles again in the cold winter months and improving blood circulation to the extremities.
Tip: Poses such as Tadasana (mountain pose) and Adho Mukha Svanasana (downward facing dog) are excellent in lengthening the back muscles and bringing the body's alignment into equilibrium once again.
